SPY STUDIES - LEVEL 2

Oh, hello. What am I supposed to do? Just start talking. Well righto. Ahem. Attention spy school students. I am Mrs Hari. I will be your Spy Studies teacher for Level 2. Remember to write your notes in your spy school notebook.
Level 2: Lesson One

LANGUAGE
Here are some more spy words that every spy needs to know!
See if you can memorize them all with a spy-friend. You never know when these words can come in handy. For instance, when I was on a mission in France, in a cafe near the sea, beautiful ocean, I must add, and beautiful tea too, with a lovely croissant ... oh I'm getting distracted again. Here are the words:
Homework: Memorize these words with a spy friend.

Here are the words:
- Camouflage - Clothes or shrubbery that makes you blend in with your surroundings. Soldiers often wear khaki clothing, which is green and brown colored, allowing them to blend into bush.
- Encode - to write a message in code.
- False drop - a fake drop that is used to trick the enemy agents. Fake messages could be put there or enemy agents could be led there and think that a secret message will be dropped there, thus concealing the actual drop, somewhere else.
- Headquarters - the home office of a group of spies. The Mr Is Headquarters is under the Adagio Airport in Giocoso.
- Key word - This is a special word that spies sometimes use when they send secret messages. See password cipher in Codes & Ciphers.
- Rendezvous - a meeting between two agents at a previously organized place and time.
- Tail - A spy who is following an enemy spy.
Homework: Memorize these words with a spy friend.
Level 2: Lesson Two

Mr Is
There are many, many Mr Is Agency rules, as Jo and Katie soon find out. Professor Morse reads them from a rather large tome at the beginning of each school year. Rules are important for a spy agency to function well. Here are some of the Mr Is Agency rules:
General Rules
There are many, many Mr Is Agency rules, as Jo and Katie soon find out. Professor Morse reads them from a rather large tome at the beginning of each school year. Rules are important for a spy agency to function well. Here are some of the Mr Is Agency rules:
- Do not go onto the Level 9 floor (this is where the Master Spy lives and works so it is out of bounds. Anyone caught on this floor is almost always expelled!)
- Do not go out of the spy school without wearing a disguise (. The Mr is Spy School Headquarters are hidden below an airport so this is crucial, since Bald Eagle agents could be lurking about)
- Always carry your ID. When spy school students begin spy school they carry their ID card with them. It is useful for letting them into some of the rooms in the headquarters
- Always be on time to class. Spy school students must always be on time to class. Otherwise, they might miss important spy information.
- Always complete your homework. I believe strongly in completing homework. Comes in handy when I spring a Mrs Hari's Quick Quiz on you!
General Rules
- Don't leave secret information lying around. Once you've memorized it, destroy it. Otherwise, enemy agents could read your messages.
- Keep your spy school notebook secret. We don't want it falling into enemy hands!
- Don't give secret information to the enemy agents! This is a big no, no. Otherwise, you will end up as an undercover agent - an agent working for the enemy or a double agent - an agent working for both sides. Neither is a good idea.
- Always be on the lookout for any suspicious enemy spy activity. Be 'Ready for Anything'.
- Be observant. Keep your brain fresh by memorizing information and being able to describe your settings/suspects in detail. Look around you!
Level 2: Lesson Three

HISTORY: Spies from the Past
There have been many spies throughout history. In Level 1 we looked at Mata Hari, a spy during World War I. In Level 2 we will look at spies during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. In particular, Mary Queen of Scots:
Mary Queen of Scots:
Who was she?
She was a cousin to Queen Elizabeth I and had been Queen of Scotland until she was forced to abdicate (give up the throne). After that, her son, James I became King of Scotland.
What did she want?
To take over Queen Elizabeth I's throne. Some people thought that the throne should be rightly hers.
What happened?
Queen Elizabeth I kept her in castles and manor houses around England, as she feared for her life should Queen Mary attempt to take over her throne. Mary sent secret messages to her supporters. She smuggled her letters out of her prison. She also wrote her messages using ciphers and coded signs for various words. However, Spymaster Francis Walsingham decoded her messages and it was enough to have her incriminated in the plot to get rid of Queen Elizabeth I so Queen Elizabeth had Queen Mary executed.
(Callery, 2006)
Homework: Find some books about Mary Queen of Scots and see what else you can find out about her.
