DISGUISE - LEVEL 3

Well howdy, spy school students and welcome to Level 3 Disguise. I'm Mr Skies and I will be ya Level 3 Disguise teacher. Ya did bring ya spy school notebook wid ja did ja?
Level 3: Lesson One

CLOTHES: ALTERING YOUR APPEARANCE
Now for the exciting part! You've chosen what clothes ya gonna wear, now ya just need to tweak things a little to make them believable and make ya-self even more hidden.
Dark Glasses
Homework: Find a selection of hats, glasses and pillows and try putting them on along with ya disguise. Take photos and stick in ya spy school notebook. See if ya can knock on ya front door to sell somethin' or do a survey or somethin' without ya family figuring out who ya are.

Dark Glasses
- Never underestimate the effect of wearing dark glasses. They hide ya eyes and sometimes ya eyebrows as well. Often ya eyes can be a dead giveaway so this is a great technique.
- Don't wear dark glasses indoors, however. Ya'll just end up looking suspicious
- Wear dark glasses outside and if ya are on a bus or in a car. Wear them at the park, the seaside or the riverside
- Make sure ya can see through them properly. Keep 'em clean.
- Don't wear dark glasses if they don't fit with ya disguise
- Ordinary glasses with the lenses taken out can be good for indoors
- Try glasses with different shaped rims e.g. round rims, square rims, rectangular shaped rims, oval rims
- Ya must take the lenses out or ya won't be able to see properly
- Don't borrow someone else's glasses. Make sure ya buy ya own from the cheap store or toy store. If ya borrow someone else's glasses and take the lenses out they will be mad. Then ya really will need a disguise.
- Wear hats that ya can pull down over ya face
- A hat with a large brim, if it fits with ya disguise, can be good for pulling down over ya face
- A hood is also good for this. A hood can cover ya hair and help ya blend into the crowd.
- Tying pillows to ya-self can make you look larger. You can tie pillows around ya legs, tummy, arms and around ya shoulders before putting on larger clothes and this will make ya look bigger. Putting pillows around ya shoulders will make ya look broader or maybe even like a football player

Spiky Hair
- Works with short hair. Ya can use mousse or gel to get it to stand up. See the chemist for this kind of product.
- If ya have boy-short hair ya can use the gel to make it curl into little curls about the size of ya fingernail
- This can be achieved by combing ya hair when it's wet and then using hair spray to keep it in place
- We talked about fringes/bangs in Level 1 so see there for more information. Fringes/Bangs can be combed to one side, pulled back (no fringe/bangs) and they can be long, short or jagged. Don't cut ya hair! Just use what ya have and comb it differently, using hair spray or clips to hold it in place
There are many different types of braid. Here are a few:
- Simple 3 strand braid
- French braid
- Corn braid
- Fish tail braid
Homework: The best way to study hairstyles is to look at 'em. Look at what hairstyles people have and make a note of 'em in ya spy school notebook. Ya can talk to hairdressers and look at their magazines for more information. Find 5 different hairstyles and draw or photograph 'em and put 'em in ya li'l ol' spy school notebook.
Level 3: Lesson Three

MAKE-UP: ALTERING YOUR APPEARANCE
Sometimes it's necessary for a spy to fake injuries. This can be achieved with make-up and other props. In the book, 'The Spy's Guidebook' edited by Lesley Sims, they talk about how to make fake injuries. Here are some of their ideas as well as some of my own.

The Black Eye
This is easily achieved by applying blue/purple/black eye shadow around the spy's eye.

The Scar
This can be achieved in several ways. One way is to use a thin red marker to draw a line for the cut and then a thin black marker to draw the lines across for the scar.

Another way is to dab a little paste on the person's hand (never on their face) and pinch the skin together while it's drying. Then using a thin red marker, draw a line in the middle where the skin pinches together. The paste will make the skin look wrinkly and drawn together.

The Bruise
This isn't as easy. First ya find a place on ya arm or leg that's a little bony e.g. elbow, wrist bone, ankle. Then dab a little bit of brown foundation onto the area. Then, wait a little for it to dry. After that, use some eye shadow, yellow first if ya have it, to dab onto the bony point. Then dab a bit of blue eye shadow in the middle. Let it blend in a little and ya have a bruise.

The Bandages
This isn't make-up but it sure helps. Attach a band aid or two or some bandage tape to ya-self. Then wrap a large bandage around a part of ya body to make it look like ya have a much bigger injury. Adding a sling or crutches if ya have 'em will complete ya disguise!
Homework: Borrow some make-up or use ya own. Remember to ask first and return it just like ya found it. Practice making make-up injuries for ya disguise.
