CULTURAL CLOTHING
People wear different types of clothes around the world. It is useful for spies to be able to recognize different types of ethnic clothing. A good way to learn about this is to go to ya local cultural festival and see the different costumes people wear. Here are some pictures of different cultural costumes. However, sometimes people only wear these kinds of costumes to cultural events, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. What they wear on a day-to-day basis may be quite different.

Exercise: Can ya identify what these items are called? See if ya can match them up. Choose from the list below. Then scroll over to see the answers!

HAIR
One way to disguise ya-self is to use fake mustaches and beards. Ya can get these from the emporium, $2 shop or any other cheap stores ya might have in ya country. If ya are going to try beards and mustaches while on a mission, remember the following things:
  • Carry a small mirror. That way, ya can check quickly to make sure ya mustache and beard are still stuck on. Sometimes they fall off if they are not stuck on properly
  • Make sure the beard and mustache are the same color as ya hair, otherwise, you will look really suspicious with two different colors of hair and ya cover may be blown. If they don't match ya hair color, ya can always wear a wig of the correct color
  • Make sure the rest of ya costume matches ya facial hair. No point wearing a little boy's outfit if ya face says you're an adult.
  • Don't let anyone touch ya face. If they do, ya beard and mustache might come off and be stuck to them!
  • Rub a little talcum powder into ya hairline so it looks like ya going grey. This will make ya look older. Ya might wanna do the same with ya beard and mustache - but don't over do it. Just a few grey hairs are fine.
  • Making a monobrow may also work. A monobrow is when ya have only one eyebrow, all the way across instead of two separate eyebrows. You may be able to use eye-pencil to draw this on or put a fake mustache there.
(Forrester, 1992)
Homework: Ask ya parents or guardians to let ya buy a fake mustache or beard. Try them on for size. Take a photo and stick it into ya spy school notebook.

Level 2: Lesson Three

MAKE-UP
There are different ways a spy can change their skin color and the age of their skin. Here are some tips:

  • To make your skin lighter, brush on some talcum powder
  • To make your skin darker, try a little cocoa
  • If you want to look tired, use some blue eye shadow and dab a little bit under your eyes
  • To make wrinkles, borrow an eye-pencil from ya mum or sister and frown at ya-self in the mirror. Scrunch up ya eyes, nose and mouth too. Then draw lines with the eye-pencil in the creases on ya face.
  • You can also use the eye-pencil to draw bags under your eyes. This will also make ya look tired.
(Forrester, 1992) (Sims, (Ed), 1999)
Homework: Borrow ya sister's or mum's make up - ask first and try some of these things, including the talcum powder and cocoa tricks. Take photos and glue them in ya spy school notebook.
